Oscar Hedstrom designed the 8-valve configuration in 1910.  The motor appeared in competition in 1911.  It was an immediate success,  faster than any of the other designs.

This  "small-base"  version of the Indian 8-valve motor first appeared in 1915.   The  "Indian 8"  was campaigned by factory riders into the 1920's.  In 1921,  "Shrimp" Burns set a new lap record at the 4th of July Dodge City race,  on a factory machine much like the one pictured here.
