    The "mystery" of these pictures revolves around the date of this race (1923),  and the fact that all of the race motors pictured are "direct-action" 2-cams with bolt-in tappet blocks.

    Since this version of the 2-cam motor was not introduced until sometime in 1924, the question arises:  why are these machines racing on the Kansas City board track in 1923?

    Could these photographs have been taken at another track or at a later date?  I'm still trying to figure this out.

    Clue:  Ralph Hepburn (pictured here) retired from professional motorcycle racing at the end of the 1924 season.
